This novel is an account of the near future, a dystopia, wherepollution and radiation syndrome has rendered countless women sterile, and the birthrates of North America are dangerously declining. A puritan theocracy nowcontrols the fountain United States called the Republic of Gilead andHandmaids are recruited to repopulate the state. This novel containsAtwoods strong sense of social awareness, as seen in the use of satire tocomment on different social conditions in the novel. The HandmaidsTale is a warning to young women of the post-feminist 1980s and after,who began taking for granted the rights that had been secured for womenby the women before them. The environmental danger of pollution and radiation run off from powerplants is commented on in the novel. Atwood is voicing her concernsabout the destruction of the environment here, and warns us of thepossibilities if the destruction continues in our world. Gilead, the ultra religious military governance is a reaction to thedramatic drop in birth rate. In the novel, Aunt Lydia, one of the women incharge of the Red Centre where handmaids are trained described Gileadshe said "the republic of Gilead knows no bounds. Gilead is withinyou." (Atwood, 29). According to the Affirmative Action Office at Iowa State University, there commit been at least two reported rapes per weekend since classes have begun this year. This is done, as a person is able to see, full circle, from the beginning of time to the end of time, the consequences of turning away from God. The ability to see a life full circle is apparent through the examination of both of these poems. Although written many years ago, the morals and principles that they convey ring very square(a) for people in this century as well as times yet to come.The Divine Comedy, written in the 14th century by Dante Alighieri, is a heroic epic. Throughout Dantes literary work, he outlines his scientific understandings of the world, his political v iews and provides the reader with a moral compass and spiritual map of which to follow. This poem is written in three parts, Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradisio, each of which is broken down into individual cantos. Inferno includes 34 cantos, whereas Purgatrio and Paradiso each contain 33 cantos, however, the first canto of Inferno is really an base to the poem.The primary characters in Dantes poem include himself, who is also the narrator, Virgil, a poet he has admired, who serves as his guide through most of the first two sections, and finally, Beatrice, his inspiration, who greets him at Paradisio and escorts him through the remainder of his journey. In Anthem for Doomed Youth, Wilfred Owen tells that only the stuttering rifles rapid rattle can patter out their hasty orisons (3-4). The poet starts to reveal the realism of war through alliteration. As readers, one can visualize the sounds of the rifles as clearly as Owen intended us to. The rifles emphasize that the opposing troops did not take grace on the individuals they are trying to kill. In dulce et decorum est, Owen uses imagery by writing, His hanging face, like a devils sick of sin (line 20).In this part of the poem, Owen talks about his fallen friend. Here, we debate how graphic his friend looked, thus confirming the position of the gruesome nature of war. Sickening delivery is utilise to invoke the shocking image of a man literally drowning in his own blood as the blood came gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs (22). This grotesque language is used to express the distasteful nature of the war. In his two poems, Owen highlights the fact that war is not all that it is chalked up to be.He does this by using strong connotative language which in turn reveals the imagery to the readers. In doing this, he wants the readers to get even a birds eye view of what he had to deal with every day. Certain phrases that the poet uses reflect Owens own drive of the war. It show the anger that he has about how the press illustrates the war to mislead people. The descriptions that he gives shows the darkness of war that he bore witness to therefore recreating the images and showing the destruction of purity through war.

What this means is that they have no power in terms of the functions that they are allowed to lead out. It is also shown when it is said that the international human rights enforcement systems are expected to have a better booster cable record than the UN in the protection of human rights. The phrase track record is used here to refer to the record of their actual performance and accomplishments.This is because in the literal sense, track record means a financial backing of speeds that an athlete runs or has been running over a period of t ime. Metaphors have also been used where the supranational Human Rights law is being likened to a guardian of religion. Here, the law and guardian have been compared without the use of as or like. There is also an example of a connotation where they say that jehad is one of the Islamic beliefs that are perceived as religious zealotry directed at non-Muslims. The word Jihad here is used as a connotation of the violent aggression of Muslims towards non-Muslims or secular people (Chon, M.and Arzt, D. , 2005). In the book, Everyday Theology How to Read Cultural Texts and Interpret Trends, figures of speech have also been used in this context. Examples of some of these are one of the characters in the book, Kevin Warwicka leading researcher and professor of cybernetics at the University of Reading, says he is a cyborg. This is a metaphor because he is comparing himself to a being that is part human, part machine. In the book also, there is also a section where biotechnology is likened to a savior, and also where we are told that we should offer ourselves as living sacrifices.In this case, we are being directly compared to sacrifices (animals that are usually offered to divinity fudge in order to appease him or thank him for something). There is also the use of metonyms where it says that whatever strike off we choose to wear, referring to the title that we choose to have because in actual fact, we cannot wear a label. Another metonym that I have discovered is when the author says that as Christians, they may fail to see the way the world looks at those who believe that the present is all that there is. Here, the world does not refer to the physical globe, but to the people who are non-believers.It is a word that is commonly substituted for those who are not adherents of Christianity (Vanhoozer, K. et al, 2007).
