Literature Review Self-Esteem Heatherton and Wyland (2003: 220) define self-esteem as â€Å"an attitude about the self that is related to personal beliefs about skills, abilities, social relationships, and future outcomes.† It is essential to be able to differentiate self-esteem from the conventional term of self-concept, which incorporates everything known about the self, such as beliefs, values, and appearance and even name and race. Although self-esteem is derived from self-concept, their differences are significant. Self-esteem is a wide-ranging concept concerned with the internal attitudes about oneself, both positive and negative, and can be considered as an indicator in psychological well-being (Padham and Aujla, 2014), whilst self-concept refers to the entirety of cognitive beliefs someone may have about themselves (Heatherton and Wyland, 2003). Self-esteem also differs from similar terms such as self-confidence and self-efficacy. Self-confidence is essentially the belief that you will be successful in accomplishing a desired objective (Perry, 2016). Self-confidence is considered as being both state-like and trait-like and also appears to be multi-dimensional (Weinberg and Gould, 2010). However, self-efficacy is a situational form of self-confidence regarding the belief about one’s capability to perform a specific task (Bandura, 1986). Despite the relatedness of these constructs, for the purpose of this research, only self-esteem will be focused on.
